A Hooked Gouge for those who love to carve greenwood. Ideal to carve cups/kuksa and to finish the bottom of lathe turned bowls.
Blade is forged on a charcoal forge and handle is turned on a pole lathe from local hardwood (type depending on seasonal stock) with a ferrule from cast tin. The cast tin eternally embraces the wood with a dovetail and grips onto a groove on the blade tang; for a strong mechanical bond, that enhances the chemical bond (epoxy).
Blade available from high carbon monosteel (spring steel) or for ultimate performance from a japanese type lamination (wrought iron body + high carbon steel edge*).
* You can choose between Swedish Uddeholm, White or Blue Paper Steel #2.
Blade is delivered sharp and with proper geometry, only some further honing recommended.
Depicted is the laminated version.
Blade is 2,6 | 1" cm broad with a 10 cm | 4" long neck; handle is 10 | 4" cm long.
Sweep is about medium (the equivalent to a section of a 10cm | 4" circle), which makes a decent compromise for both chip removal and finishing. It is possible to make the sweep more aggressive for quicker removal or milder for a smoother finish.
Made to order.
