A Swann Neck Gouge for those who love to carve greenwood the old-fashioned way. The swann neck provides excellent leverage and the oversize handle allows to work with two hands when the piece of wood is clamped. The edge is of high carbon steel, either mono or laminated to wrought iron, which provides extra backbone and improves edge retention.

The bevel is very shallow and the steel only lightly tempered, hence very hard and cuts like butter in greenwood, softwoods and moderate hardwoods.

Blade is forged on a charcoal forge and handle is turned on a pole lathe from local hardwood (type depending on seasonal stock) with a ferrule of hammered reclaimed copper.

Blade available from high carbon monosteel (japanese vanadium steel) or for ultimate performance from a japanese type lamination (wrought iron body + high carbon steel edge*).

* You can choose between Swedish Uddeholm, White or Blue Paper Steel #2.

Blade is delivered sharp and with proper geometry, only some further honing recommended.

Blade is 4,5cm* | 1 1/2"  broad with a 10 cm | 4" long neck; handle is 15 | 6" cm long.

Made to order.
